The most common thing we hear is this: "I got up from the table and my skin felt tighter right away."
That feeling is real. But it isn't collagen.
What you're feeling in that moment is mild swelling — the skin puffs slightly and that reads as tightness. It's temporary. Collagen production doesn't work that way. It isn't instant. It's something you build, treatment over treatment.
We'd rather say that upfront, because a clear expectation is part of the treatment.
The Mechanics: How It Works
Microneedling creates microchannels — controlled micro-injuries — in the skin.
Those micro-injuries do two things. First, they open a pathway for serums to penetrate instead of sitting on the surface. Second, and more importantly, they activate the body's natural repair response.
Collagen is a protein that heals. When the body is cut, burned, or injured, it produces collagen as a defense mechanism. Microneedling borrows that mechanism: it signals to the body that there's something to repair, and the body responds by producing collagen.
As we age, we lose collagen production. This is a way to switch it back on.
And collagen doesn't discriminate. Once it's produced, it goes to work on whatever is around it — fine lines, texture, elasticity.
Our Cold Protocol
This is where we do things differently.
We triple cleanse before treatment, and that can be with lukewarm water. But from the moment microneedling is finished, everything turns cold. Cold towel. Cold roller.
The reason is simple: we want to minimize inflammation. For everyone — not just melanated skin.
Inflammation is energy the body spends bringing skin back to its normal state. We want that energy going toward what matters: healing the microchannels and producing collagen.
Red Light: The Step That Sets Us Apart
After microneedling we apply a mask — and the mask is customized to each person's goal. It isn't the same mask for hyperpigmentation as it is for antiaging.
With the mask on, the client spends 20 minutes in the red light chamber.
Red light reaches the mitochondria in the cells and energizes them. In theory, that speeds up cellular turnover.
The result is what we're proudest of: most of our clients are back to normal within 24 hours. In many cases, you can't even tell they had anything done.
Because microneedling, contrary to what people believe, should be a gentle procedure. Detailed. Well calculated. Not aggressive.
Hyperpigmentation and Melasma: A Different Protocol
This matters, and we want to be clear about it.
The protocol for hyperpigmentation and melasma is not the same as the protocol for antiaging.
Melasma and hyperpigmentation involve pigment in the epidermis, and in many cases in the upper layers of the dermis as well. Most cases involve both layers.
On skin with more melanin, irritation is exactly what triggers more pigmentation. An aggressive treatment can worsen the precise problem you came in to solve.
So our approach with these clients is shallow, low, slow, and steady. Less depth. More sessions. More patience.
Yes, it takes longer. But in our view it's the safer route — and the benefit is broader, because collagen production helps with everything else at the same time.
On Lasers
We're not entirely opposed to laser treatments for melasma.
But the outcome depends enormously on three things: the type of laser, the operator, and whether that person genuinely understands how melanated skin reacts.
In our experience, few technicians have that specific knowledge. These are very strong, very effective machines — and that cuts both ways.
If you're considering laser for melasma, research thoroughly. Ask specifically about their experience with melanated skin.
We choose the slow, safe route.
What to Expect Afterward
It depends on the depth of the treatment and the mask used.
clients may notice light peeling — skin flaking slightly — but without redness or inflammation.
Hyperpigmentation and melasma clients follow a different protocol precisely to minimize any redness or inflammation afterward.
Your medical history matters too. If you have diabetes or high blood pressure, or depending on how you've cared for your skin before treatment, recovery can vary.
The first 24 hours:
- No harsh chemicals
- No makeup
- Keep the skin clean to avoid any bacterial infection
